Here are 10 tips that Better Homes and Gardens recommends you do before your move, so that your actual move runs as smoothly as possible:

  • Connect the internet – Most people want internet in their homes right away, since we’re constantly interacting on multiple devices, but many people forget that this needs to be set up ahead of time. Call your local service provider and set up an appointment several weeks out to be on the safe side.
  • Set up electricity – Energy will likely be disconnected in your new home prior to your move, so call your local energy provider beforehand to give them the information they need to set up your new account. This should be fairly simple, and that way you won’t be stuck unpacking with flashlights!
  • Contact movers – BHG recommends contacting movers three to four weeks out. The longer you wait, the more you might have to adjust your personal schedule to meet theirs. Even if you aren’t hiring movers, but have family or friends helping, make sure to give them advance notice too.
  • Deep clean – If you have access to your new home, it’s ideal to give it a deep cleaning before you move anything in. That’s so much easier than trying to clean around things! Scrub inside cabinets, vacuum and steam clean carpets, scrub bathtubs and showers, clean windows and baseboards and so on.
